Meet Jules the rescue seal

Over the last month or so a young seal has been spending some time on the beach at Kirkhaven and has not seemed particularly bothered by the public. We noticed that it had a flipper tag but this isn't uncommon as many of the isle of may seals have them, attached by the seal researchers. It was only in the last few days as the seal entertained the public again that I noticed that the tag had national sanctuary on the reverse side and the end of a phone number. With a bit of detective work helped by Google I tracked down the National Seal Sanctuary who have centres at Norfolk, Oban and Cornwall and they pulled out the dossier on "Jules".
Jules was rescued on 3rd January 2012 at Old Hunstanton suffering from worms and re squinting eyes and weighing only 24kg. Apparently he took an age to fatten up and was finally released at Snettisham, Norfolk on 11th June weighing 47kg. So it is good to see seals rescued by the Centre surviving in the wild and a year and a bit down the line he had come along way geographically and seems to have settled in to the Isle of May community very well. It will be interesting to see if he sticks around. So if you are visiting over the next few weeks look out for Jules, he certainly seems to like visitors.
